BARRE is a total body workout that use aspects of ballet, Pilates, yoga, aerobics, and resistance training to create that “dancer’s body” – the long, lean, sculpted body that exudes strength, flexibility and balance. Different muscle groups are worked at various intensities to burn calories and tone the entire body. Anyone can do BARRE despite athletic ability, age, injury, or exercise regimen. Modifications are explained and demonstrated throughout the class to individualize the experience of every participant. Class begins with a short warm up, followed by cardio no/low -impact training to wake and warm the body utilizing movements that will increase the heart rate as well as tone and strengthen the arms, back, and legs (10 -15 minutes). The following section of class will be a series of exercises done at the BARRE (30-40 minutes). Small isometric movements followed by deep stretching will create long, lean, and toned muscles in the legs and gluteus. The area of focus during this time will be groups of muscles in the entire torso (shoulders to hips) as well as the legs. The final portion of class (10-15 minutes) will be floor/mat work to target specifically the core, hips, and/or gluteus as well as static stretching. This allows the stretch to come gradually and gently allowing the muscles to relax and gradually lengthen and therefore become more flexible. Elongation of the spine, postural improvements, increased flexibility and range of motion in the joints, better balance and coordination, improved muscle strength, and greater muscle and cardiovascular endurance are all benefits of a consistent BARRE workout.
